Shine: St. Mary’s Altar by Veit Stoss is a unique album, comprised of several parts. The most important one is iconographic material, gathered by Andrzej Nowakowski, documenting the status of one of the largest works of art of the late Middle Ages in Europe. The macro-photography, the general and detailed layout presents the altar in such a manner, which was impossible until now, and which this masterpiece truly deserves. The use of professional lighting and elevators, which were brought into St. Mary’s Basilica on wooden rollers allowed the author to reveal the details of Stoss’ opus magnum, which cannot normally be seen: facial expressions, veins on the legs, hair on the curly beards, small figures placed on the predella or on the architrave of the main panel. The monumental effect was enhanced by progress in technology and the digital editing of photographs, as well as the use of the latest printing techniques, along for the gold elements of St. Mary’s Altar to be viewed in a magnificent manner. This photographic documentation will allow monument researchers to reach places and details in the altar which were not and still cannot be seen without specialised equipment.

The album is addressed not only to specialists, but to any art lover, who is interested in the unique world of creations of the Master from Nuremburg. The album editors decided to present a wide review of Stoss’ achievements in the publication. In effect of the long term efforts, a catalogue of the remaining works of the artists or those attributed to him, prepared by Jan Sadkiewicz, has been created. It includes photographs and descriptions of the sculptures, bas reliefs, paintings, altars and their elements, grave stones, copperplate engravings and sketches, which are presently scattered in various museums and churches all over the world, from Krakow to Cleveland and from London to Florence. They also include pieces from small towns near Krakow, discovered and attributed to Stoss just several or several dozen years ago. The compact, yet precise description of each of the 44 pieces of art allows one to not only learn about its parameters, but also about its history and also suggests certain hypotheses, regarding, for example the auto-biographical allusions intertwined by the Master into scenes from the life of Christ.

A significant part of the publication is constituted by the texts of outstanding Polish researchers and experts on the topic: Professor Piotr Skubiszewski, Professor Jerzy Gadomski and Dr. Grażyna Jurkowlaniec. The first places the Master with other outstanding artists of the same era. The second text paints the historic background of the creation of St. Mary’s Altar and its connection to the theological thoughts of the era. The third presents the present status of the research and the analysis of the Krakow retabulum.

A bibiliography of Veit Stoss and St. Mary’s Altar are added to the album, on CD. As the first of its type, it does not cover only research works, but also belles-lettres, popular literature, essay writing, children and teen literature as well as films. It has a chronological layout, it constitutes a bibliographic “narration”, showing the presence of the grandiose masterpiece and the great artist in European awareness. The potential reader of Stoss’ bibliography is not only an art historian, but also a culture, literature, mentality and idea historian sensu largo. The publication is printed in a bilingual version. Polish and English. It is addressed to specialists, researchers as well as all those who are interested in culture and art.

Blask: Ołtarz Mariacki Wita Stwosza to album wyjątkowy, składający się z kilku części. Najważniejszą z nich jest wykonany przez Andrzeja Nowakowskiego materiał ikonograficzny, dokumentujący stan jednego z największych dzieł sztuki późnego średniowiecza w Europie. Makrofotografia, plany ogólne i szczegółowe przedstawiają ołtarz w sposób, jaki nie był możliwy do tej pory, a na który z całą pewnością to arcydzieło zasługiwało. Wykorzystanie profesjonalnego oświetlenia oraz podnośników, które na drewnianych podkładach wjechały nocą do Bazyliki Mariackiej, pozwoliło autorowi wyeksponować niewidoczne na co dzień szczegóły Stwoszowego opus magnum: grymasy twarzy, żyłki na nogach, włoski na kręconych brodach, drobne figury umiejscowione w predelli czy na obramieniu szafy głównej. Monumentalny efekt wzmocniony został przez postęp w fotografii i cyfrowej obróbce zdjęć, a także zastosowanie najnowocześniejszych technik druku, pozwalających w wyjątkowy sposób oddać złote elementy Ołtarza Mariackiego. Ta dokumentacja fotograficzna pozwoli badaczom zabytku na dotarcie do miejsc i szczegółów ołtarza, których zobaczenie nie było i nie jest możliwe bez specjalistycznego sprzętu.

Album skierowany jest nie tylko do specjalistów, ale do każdego miłośnika sztuki, którego zainteresuje niepowtarzalny świat twórczości Mistrza z Norymbergi. Redaktorzy albumu postanowili opatrzyć publikację szerokim przeglądem dorobku Stwosza. W efekcie długotrwałych starań powstał katalog zachowanych dzieł artysty lub jemu przypisywanych, opracowany przez Jana Sadkiewicza. Zawiera fotografie i opisy rzeźb, płaskorzeźb, malowideł, ołtarzy i ich elementów, płyt nagrobnych, miedziorytów i szkiców rozproszonych dzisiaj po muzeach i kościołach całego świata, od Krakowa po Cleveland, i od Londynu po Florencję. Są wśród nich także dzieła z małych podkrakowskich miejscowości, odkryte i przypisane Stwoszowi zaledwie kilka lub kilkanaście lat temu. Zwięzły, ale precyzyjny opis każdego z 44 dzieł pozwala poznać nie tylko jego parametry, ale również historię oraz podsuwa interesujące hipotezy, dotyczące na przykład autobiograficznych aluzji wplatanych przez Mistrza w sceny z życia Chrystusa.

Istotną część publikacji stanowią teksty wybitnych polskich badaczy i znawców tematu: prof. Piotra Skubiszewskiego, prof. Jerzego Gadomskiego oraz dr Grażyny Jurkowlaniec. Pierwszy zestawia Mistrza z innymi wybitnymi artystami tamtej epoki. Drugi tekst rysuje tło historyczne powstania Ołtarza Mariackiego i jego powiązanie z myślą teologiczną epoki. Trzeci przedstawia obecny stan badań i analizę krakowskiego retabulum.

Do książki dołączona jest, na CD, bibliografia Wita Stwosza i Ołtarza Mariackiego. Jako pierwsza obejmuje nie tylko prace naukowe, ale też literaturę piękną, popularną, eseistykę, literaturę dla dzieci i młodzieży oraz filmy. Ma układ chronologiczny, stanowi swoistą „narrację” bibliograficzną, ukazującą obecność wielkiego dzieła i wielkiego artysty w świadomości europejskiej. Potencjalnym odbiorcą bibliografii Stwoszowskiej ma być nie tylko historyk sztuki, ale także historyk kultury sensu largo, literatury, mentalności oraz idei.
