Edi and Jureczek live together in a dilapidated factory. They make their living collecting scrap-metal in the streets of the city and spend the small amount of money they make in a seedy local bar where two brothers kill a patron in the toilet over his outstanding debts.

A few days later the brothers make a surprising proposal to Edi. Since their parents' death, the brothers look after their seventeen-years old sister, "The Princess", whom they lock at home in an attempt to keep her away from other men. They want Edi to tutor her.

They come to Edi because he has an unusual passion—he gathers up all the books he finds in the garbage and reads them—but also because Edi is so ugly they can't imagine the Princess taking a liking to him. Edi takes on the task but one day the girl, bored with her lessons, expands the conversation. She teaches Edi some things about life, and he loses his virginity to her.

Three months later the brothers find out that their sister is pregnant. The main suspect is the young gypsy who delivers booze and who has a crush on the girl. The brothers seek revenge, and the Princess, trying to protect her lover, tells them that Edi is father of her unborn child. Edi was a winner of many awards at international film festivals and the Polish submission the Academy Awards.

"a touching and highly involving portrait of marginal characters who manage to confront their misery and at least briefly triumph over it."

" the switch here is that it is the Princess who turns out to be a frog, lying to hide her sexual voraciousness, and making Edi lose his manhood just as he discovers it."

"a modern morality play with a drop or two of bitter-tasting hope."
