In 20th century Polish art has attained an unprecendented status; for the first time the achievements of a diverse group of Polish artists have been widely acclaimed. This has not been just a passing fashion; the achievements of Polish art in the 20th century promise to withstand the test of time, and to provide fundamental points of reference - landmarks setting out the course of further development for every one of the arts. It is appropriate to mention the names of at least some of these artists, working both in Poland and abroad. In music, composers such as Grażyna Bacewicz, Henryk Mikołaj Górecki, Wojciech Kilar, Witold Lutosławski, Andrzej Panufnik, Krzysztof Penderecki, Karol Szymanowski and Aleksander Tansman.

Polska sztuka osiągnęła w naszym stuleciu pozycję wyjątkową: po raz pierwszy powszechne uznanie zyskał dorobek licznej grupy twórców, a oni sami zdobyli międzynarodowy rozgłos. Nie wynikało to z jakiejś chwilowej mody, lecz z rzeczywistej wartości dokonań. Ich dzieła opierają się upływowi czasu, są nierzadko wzorami do naśladowania bądź istotnymi punktami odniesienia, kamieniami milowymi wyznaczającymi dalszy kierunek rozwoju poszczególnych dziedzin.

Książka stanowi ilustrowany fotografiamii zbiór informacji w postaci krótkich esejów na temat ważnych postaci i wydarzeń w polskiej muzyce klasycznej w XX wieku.
