This type of plaques is known in Polish art as a ryngraf derived from the German word ringkragen. Historically it was part of the chest armor worn high under the neck protecting the throat and usually adorned with religious motifs. Over time the use of the armor diminished, however the ryngraf was borne by Polish warriors and noblemen as tradition. Today this heritage is carried on as the essential gift for newborn Polish boys and girls; although the ryngraf is no longer worn on the chest, instead it is designed as a patriotic-religious wall plaque.
