The Engineer is a powerful and compelling thriller, the story of a young boy of Polish descent, born in Canada, who is unable to escape the burden of history. Teddy Labden finds that try as he might hecannot escape his immigrant past and the mystery of his father's record in Eastern Europe. Whilst England draws him ever closer to her bosom Teddy meets a darker side of life full of connections and coincidences that lead him into the dangers of the Secret Service. When the fog of war interrupts his playboy existence Teddy begins to see that like a cog in a machine he can be used or he can become the engineer of events. Through a variety of affairs he looks for the love and affection that is missing in his life. But can he find it? His Polish upbringing forces him to take unexpected sides with consequences that put his life in danger from the Russian agents embedded in MI6. He becomes involved in the fringes of the political assassination of the Polish Prime Minister, but who gave the orders? Teddy is helped by a variety of friends to survive in a world of intrigue hidden from ordinary men and women.

Having brushed with the security Services in his late teens and early twenties Jan Kusmirek went on to become one of the world's leading authorities on aromatic skin care, medicine and aromacosmetology. He has lectured around the world and is a prolific writer with many papers and articles published on the subject. His two non fiction books Aromatherapy for the Family and Liquid Sunshine have become standards in the profession and related industries. He is still very active in the organic movement and is a strong supporter of sustainable farming. Finding and designing new applications for novel crops remains part of his ethos in his world of applied aromatics. Work enambled him to become a world traveller, spending much time in the Far East and Eastern Europe meeting and listening to a diversity of people. Their lives and experiences inspired his first novel The Engineer. His trilogy Chronicles of Love and Honour concerns the events and personalities that moulded and squandered the lives of the ordinary people of Europe who sought no more than a better life through revolution, war and social change in the twentieth century. Today Jan divides his time between the Carpathian Mountains of Poland and the Somerset Levels of England.
